Playa del Carmen is a town that, despite having become a major tourist development, has been able to keep its provincial essence.
In Mayan times it was known as Xaman-há, and it was particularly important as it was the starting point for traveling to the Island of Cozumel, then known as Kuzamil. On the island, the goddess Ixchel, goddess of fertility, was worshiped. It was a visit that he had to do at least once in his life and it was quite a mystical experience where he had to fast for several days, as well as pray and take steam baths to purify the body.
Playa del Carmen offers 15 kilometers of beautiful Caribbean coastline and is the heart of the Riviera Maya. It is located approximately one hour from Cancun to the north and from Tulum to the south.
It has soft sandy beaches, dozens of beach clubs and its iconic pedestrian street, Fifth Avenue, which allow you to enjoy a fun day on the shores of the Mexican Caribbean.
A fun way to get around Playa del Carmen is by bike. It has a 4 km bike path that runs along Avenida 10, as well as two trails that connect two commercial corridors: Centro Maya and Plaza Las Américas. There is also another bike path that connects Playacar, Xcaret and Xplor that runs parallel to the highway.
When it comes to lodging, Playa del Carmen offers something for everyone. There are small cheap hostels and boutique hotels, some with ocean views and others just a few blocks from the beach.
